The Cruise Industry in 2020: Navigating New Waters

Wondering how COVID-19 will affect your cruise plans now and in the future? Here's a look at what cruise lines are doing for passengers.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, cruise lines voluntarily and temporarily suspended cruise-ship operations from and to U.S. ports of call. Cruise lines are doing their best to keep passengers informed about future sailings, including policies that allow for future cruise credits, as well as refunds and relaxed cancellation rules. And when the seas do open again, cruise lines will be eager to welcome passengers back with special deals and offers. Oceania Cruises has already extended an offer to our Members to receive a $300 shipboard credit for bookings in 2020, 2021 and 2022.

You may be wondering how the cruise line you are supposed to be sailing on is handling the coronavirus outbreak and how future cruise plans are affected. ClubLife wants our readers to be aware of policies at the various cruise lines, and we have compiled the guide below to help you quickly find coronavirus-related cruise cancellations and updates.

Virtual Voyages Bring Cruising Home

In this time of social distancing and sheltering at home, cruise lines are discovering there are elements of the cruise experience that can be delivered straight into people’s homes.

Crystal Cruises launched Crystal at Home, offering a weekly series of livestreaming events, including workouts and cooking and cocktail demos, as well as a podcast guest-lecture series. They are also inviting former guests to share their favorite cruising memories on social media using the hashtag #CrystalFamily.

Viking recently launched Viking.TV to livestream video experiences from around the world, including cultural experiences, demos and virtual tours of destinations showcasing the art and culture of the area. One feature, “Fridays at Home at Highclere Castle,” will take viewers on weekly curated, live tours around Highclere Castle, widely recognized as the filming location of Downton Abbey.

Although you may not be cruising the world in the next few months, the world of cruising may be coming to you.
